SERTEC ASCENSORES Ltda. is a vertical transport company founded by Don Pedro Gutiérrez, a professional technician in diesel engines and a university technician in industrial electronics, who one day came to OTIS by chance, looking for work, and stayed with elevators for life.
This happened in 1977, and then he worked for other multinational brands, even with a stop outside Chile. Finally, after seventeen years, he participated in creating a national company and was there for 20 years. This was the step before deciding to start his own company, SERTEC ASCENSORES LTDA., into which he has poured his 47 years of experience.
Revista del Ascensor: – Don Pedro, elevator repair is one of SERTEC Elevators’ strengths, is it so?
Pedro Gutiérrez: – People’s safety is a priority. Elevators transport people and heavy loads, and any failure can cause serious accidents. With constant use, elevators are worn out, is necessary to replace their damaged parts. Regulations require inspections and maintenance to meet safety standards.
Repairs improve vertical transport and the user experience in a building. Keeping elevators in good condition is important for the building’s reputation and customer satisfaction. Repairs are essential to ensure elevator safety and efficiency, as well as user satisfaction.

R del A.: – We see that several Chilean companies take on the representation of European or Asian companies. Did you think of following that path?
P.G.: – Indeed, it is an idea that we plan to implement in 2025 when we have a clearer idea of the economic panorama and the measures the government will go through.
R del A.: – The pandemic already seems like ancient history, but did it change the uses at work?
P.G.: – To tell the truth, we have already resumed activities in a traditional and in-person manner, although we maintain some measures to care for the staff, today we maintain regularity in our operations.
R del A.: – Has your company staff received the necessary training from SERTEC? According to the growth of elevators in the market, is there a good supply of well-trained personnel?
P.G.: – In 47 years, I think I have trained many technicians. Although Sertec started with a technical team already formed, we have trained a new generation of technicians. On the other hand, it should be considered that, normatively, technicians who are not professionals must be certified by an external entity.
R del A.: – What is your preference for talking about the type of clients? ¿Family housing buildings or high-traffic facilities, such as hospitals, offices, and government buildings?
P.G.: – In general, we do not have none. I firmly believe that all clients are good, no matter the financial contribution they make to the company.
R del A.: – Are maintenance SMEs working according to the famous German standards? Would you do so?
P.G.: – From the normative point of view, the law requires the application of Chilean standards. In case there is no concordance, the standards of the equipment manufacturer are applied.
R del A.: – What role do certifying companies play in Chile’s Vertical Transport? We see that there are quite a few.
P.G.: – The certifying companies play an important role since they are mandated by law to verify that all vertical transport equipment is well maintained and in safe conditions for its users and the equipment itself.
On the other hand, because they have no relationship with the maintenance companies, they give the client greater certainty regarding the work maintainers do.
